Description

Captured ship: Christian V otherwise Christianus Quintus of Bergen (master Jan Benjamyns of Amsterdam, resident of Bergen, otherwise John Benjaminson).

Capture history: a Danish Norwegian merchant ship (500-600 tons/250 lasts, built at Vastervik, Sweden, and bought at Amsterdam 2 years before), bound from Bergen to Cadiz, laden with deals and tar; taken on 9/19 April 1673 off the Needles, Isle of Wight, by HMS Falcon ([Thomas] Andrews commanding) and brought into Cowes.

Court Papers, numbered CP 1-CP 2 :-

  • [CP 1]: examinations of eight men of the ships Hoorn, Hunter or [Jager] of Middelburg privateer, HMS Falcon, Christianus Quintus, taken at Portsmouth, 17 April 1673;
  • [CP 2]: claim of the owners for the ship and cargo, 9 May 1673.

Extra information:-

  • The master of the prize was heard telling his officers to be 'of one tale' and his men to 'speak you right as I have told you'. The master told the Lieutenant of the captor that the ship was waiting for a Dutch convoy, 5 of the crew were Dutch.
  • See IND 1/9012, f.10: the ship and cargo were restored 16 May 1673.
  • The ships papers were numbered 1-44, plus two journals (see examination of the master), but were probably restored with the ship.
  • Owners were Frederick (Vice-Chancellor of Norway) and Harmand Garman, otherwise Harman Gorman (President), Evart Christianson Tolfer, Walter Vregen Termeilen, Daniell Volkman, Cornelis van Reeden and others, residents of Bergen.
