Description

Captured ship: Francis of Nieuwpoort (master Francis de Mitter).

History: a Spanish Netherlands (Flemish) merchant ship bound from Ostend or Dunkirk to Newcastle, wrecked near Newcastle while it was being guided by pilots on 3 June 1689.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1a-CP 4]: attestation relating to the unloading of the ship, depositions stating that the vessel was bought at Dunkirk, three examinations, further attenstation, two translations of exhibits sent from Nieuwpoort;
  • [CP 5]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of a merchant in Nieuwpoort;
  • [CP 6/1-CP 6/11]: exhibits sent into the court together, including letters and attestations, two of which are in Flemish with translations. They relate to dispute between Balthazar La Frank, the ship's owner and the pilots who were allegedly responsible for the wreck.

[Decision: restored 17 September 1689].
