Matyas RAKOSI: Hungarian. This leading communist politician was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hungarian authorities in 1935 but was later released allowing him to go to the USSR. Always Moscow's man, in 1946 he returned to Hungary to become Vice-Premier of the communist government and First Secretary of the Communist Party. His harsh rule was blamed by the Soviet Union for the Hungarian Uprising in 1956, and RAKOSI was forced to resign and retire to the Soviet Union. With photograph
