The Southern African Department was formed in 1979, one of the successors to the Central and Southern Africa Department (1973-1979). At its creation, the department had responsibilities for the following: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.
The Southern African Department ran until 1990 when it was succeeded by the Central and Southern Africa Department.
