Folio 155.
To: Charles E Deacon, Town Clerk and Clerk to the Local Board of Health, Southampton [Hampshire].
From: The General Board of Health.
Subject Matter: Draft letter acknowledging receipt of a letter dated 17 September 1856. It is pointed out that the sum of £115,649 11s 5d is the sum for which the sanction of the General Board had been given previous to the sanction forwarded on the 12 September, which recites the fact, and which enables the Local Board to borrow a further sum of £6000 - making £121,649 11s 5d. It is explained that on reference to the papers in the office of the General Board, the amount sanctioned appears to be as is stated in the last sanction, but that amount does not refer to the sum actually borrowed, which may, as stated by Deacon, be £108,361, even though the sum of £121,649 11s 5d is that which the Local Board have power to borrow. The Board acknowledge, however, that an error may possibly have been committed. Deacon is asked to furnish a statement of the sanctions held by the Local Board, if it should still appear to him that the amount recited in the last sanction is incorrect.
