Prisoner name: Edward Coleman, Thomas Hogben, Sarah Sampson and Mary Ann West.
Prisoner age: Coleman aged 42, Hogben aged 41, Sampson aged 10 or 11 and West aged 11 or 12.
Court and date of trial: Kent Quarter Sessions, St Augustines, April 1837.
Crime: Horse stealing (Coleman and Hogben). Housebreaking into a dwelling house at St Lawrence, Isle of Thanet, and stealing wearing apparel (Sampson and West).
Initial sentence: Transportation for life (Coleman and Hogben); seven years transportation (Sampson and West).
Gaoler's report: Not known (Coleman and Hogben); Supposed dishonest (Sampson and West).
Annotated (Outcome): Nil (Coleman and Hogben); ordered to Penitentiary, 29 April 1837 (Sampson and West).
Petitioner(s): William Deeds of Sandling, Hythe, chairman Kent Quarter Sessions.
Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): Sampson and West pleaded guilty; they are young and have had a bad example set them by their parents; Coleman seemed a respectable man but would not account for his conduct in stealing his brother's horses.
Additional Information: Sarah Sampson and Mary Ann West tried with the latter's mother, Elizabeth West, who was acquitted. Thomas Hogben was indicted but not tried for also stealing a donkey.
