Description

Prisoner name: William Chipchase.

Prisoner age: 53.

Prisoner occupation: Joiner, army pensioner.

Court and date of trial: Newcastle upon Tyne [Northumberland] Lent Assizes, February 1837.

Crime: Stabbing and wounding Elizabeth Chipchase (nee Price), his wife, on 6 September 1836.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to 14 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character etc good.

Annotated (Outcome): Ordered to Penitentiary 29 April 1837.

Petitioner(s): 26 inhabitants of Newcastle.

Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The prisoner has an exemplary record of over 21 years army service; his wife contracted immoral habits and drank and consorted with other men; she took most of his pension while he was awaiting trial, leaving him with no resources to employ counsel; he is deeply contrite for his actions and his health has suffered while in prison.

Other papers: Letter from Major John Chipchase, 76th Regiment, Stirling Castle, testifying to the prisoner's good conduct as a private soldier in 61st Regiment in Peninsular War. Two letters from [W Dod], Brompton Park, one accompanying petition and the other stating that the prisoner has been transferred to the hulks at Woolwich.

Additional Information: Prisoner held on Ganymede hulk.
