Lawrence Sidney WHITTLE, alias Larry: British. WHITTLE came to notice in 1944 while working at the Radar Research and Development Establishment (RRDE) when nominated for a Communist Party school. In applying to be accredited as a delegate to the Party's 20th National Congress in 1948 he stated that he had been a member since 1943. In 1948 he resigned from RRDE and took up a post with the Air Ministry which brought him within the terms of the Treasury circular of May 1948 establishing the 'purge' procedure. After interview with the 'Three Advisers' the case against him was held to be substantiated and he was transferred to the National Physical Laboratory. In 1961 WHITTLE asked for his case to be reviewed but indications that he had attended Party meetings in 1954 and 1957 could not be resolved and his request was denied
