Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Three Friends (master Jonathan Coffin).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 75 tons, 10 men) bound from St Eustatius to North Carolina, laden with salt and dry goods; taken on 14 May 1778 about 4 leagues N of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina by HMS Ariel (Charles Phipps commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the Caribbean Islands to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Henry Monkhouse, midshipman, 25 May 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Phipps v The schooner Three Friends and her cargo, 25 May 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Thomas Millet, mate, of Massachusetts, 26 May 1778.
