Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Three Brothers (master Hugh Neal).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 30 tons) bound from Great Choptank to Baltimore, Maryland, laden with flour and Indian corn; taken on 17 March 1783 near the mouth of the Great Choptank River in the Chesapeake Bay by the loyalist privateer Kidnapper (John Kid commanding, and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Kid v The schooner Three Brothers and her cargo, 31 March 1783;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Alexander Morton, 1 April 1783;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John Diragin of Maryland, 1 April 1783.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-6 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
