Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Rising Sun of Maryland (master George Rowan).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 65 tons, 7 men) bound from Baltimore, Maryland to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco, flour, staves; taken on 12 May 1778 near Cape Charles, Virginia by HMS Solebay (Thomas Symonds commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master James Symons, master's mate, 22 May 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Symonds v The sloop Rising Sun and her cargo, 22 may 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Stephen Stiles, of Maryland, mate, 25 May 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-5 (Maryland papers):-

  • SP 1: bill of lading, 24 April 1778;
  • SP 2: clearance bond, from Maryland to St Eustatius, 25 April 1778
  • SP 3: orders to Rowan from owners Messrs Hammond & Co, 23 April 1778;
  • SP 4: business letter from Messrs Hammond & Co, Baltimore, to Samuel Curson, by Captain Rowan, 24 April 1778;
  • SP 5: business letter from Messrs Hammond & Co, Baltimore, to William Patterson, by Captain Rowan, 24 April 1778.
