Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Luzerne of Philadelphia (master Thomas Bell).

History: an American merchant ship with a letter of marque (150 tons) bound from Port Lorient to Philadelphia, laden with salt, brandy, 2 trunks with dry merchandise and china; taken in April 1781 by the privateer Enterprise (Thomas Eden commanding), and brought into the River Shannon, Ireland.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-173) brought in by Christopher Court merchant of London, agent for the captor, 21 April 1781;
  • [CP 2]: translations of ship's papers 1, 53, 54 and 55.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-173 (Pennsylvania papers):-

  • SP 1: clearance, 23 March 1781;
  • SP 2: ship's register, owners Inglis & Morris, 3 November 1779;
  • SP 3: printed privateer commission, 25 October 1780;
  • SP 4: bill;
  • SP 5: printed instructions of Congress for privateers, 3 April 1776;
  • SP 6: clearance bond, Philadelphia, 23 March 1781;
  • SP 7-SP 22: factures or invoices of cargo, accounts etc, on behalf of Green; Graham Wayne; Samuel Ashmead; Thomas Middleton; Captain Harvey; Blackston & Snowden; Mrs Esther Robinson; Miss Cash; Captain Ord; Samuel GIllespie; John Francis; Adam Hubley; Robert Jewel; James Hood; Messrs Robert, Samuel, Lewis Wharton; March 1781
  • SP 23-SP 138A: bills of lading;
  • SP 139-SP 173: invoices.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1; Ship's papers: 2-6 (large pencil numbers): two large bundles of ships papers added from HCA 42/138. All sorted and renumbered in 2025].
