Captured ship: Lucretia (prize master Seth Cleaveland).
History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 70 tons, 5 men), bound from South Carolina to Surinam, laden with tobacco, tar, turpentine, pitch staves, deal boards and 50 casks of rice; taken first by the privateer Thynne (Sampson Hall commanding) on 5 July 1778; retaken by an American privateer on 15 July and sent in for Massachusetts Bay; taken for the third time on 18 July 1778 in latitude 39°N, longitude 53°W by HMS Seaford (John Colpoys commanding), HMS Grasshopper, (Robert Boyle Nicholas commanding); and HMS Cygnet (William Saviney commanding); and HMS William and Mary (? commanding), and brought into Deal.
