Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Lucretia or Lauretia (master John Miller).

History: an American merchant ship (sloop, 40 tons, 7 men) bound from New Providence to New Haven, Connecticut, laden with salt, fruit and logwood; taken on 31 August 1782 in latitude 36°5'N, by HMS Marlborough (Taylor Penny commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Tristram Hillman, fourth lieutenant, 11 September 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Penny v The sloop Lucretia and her cargo, 11 September 1782;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of John Miller of Connecticut, 13 September 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-4 (Connecticut papers):-

  • SP 1: ship's register, 2 July 1782;
  • SP 2: clearance from New Haven, 2 July 1782;
  • SP 3: muster roll, 2 July 1782;
  • SP 4: receipt in Spanish, 6 August 1782.
