Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Baltimore (master John Fanning).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 40-50 tons, 6 men) bound from Baltimore to St Eustatius, laden with tobacco, flour and bread, with instructions to refit as a privateer in Martinique, or any French or Dutch island; taken on 25 September 1778 off the Capes of Virginia by the loyalist privateer Hammond (Bridger Goodrich commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Goodrich v The schooner Baltimore, 2 October 1778;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Isaac Burdon gunner, 5 October 1778;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Fanning, 9 October 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-8, Maryland papers:-

  • SP 1: crew list and agreement;
  • SP 2: official ship's papers;
  • SP 3-SP 4: Congress's instuctions to privateers, and privateer commission;
  • SP 5-SP 7: three letters of instruction to the master, from John Crockett, in June, and two by John McLure, September 1778;
  • SP 8: bill for provisions.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-4; Ship's papers: 5-12 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
