Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Badine or La Badine (master Jean Pierre Blanc).

History: a French merchant ship (180 tons, 16 men including 1 American) bound from Marseilles, via Cadiz, allegedly to St Pierre et Miquelon, laden with salt, wine and dry goods; taken on 26 August 1778 off Cape Charles, Virginia, by HMS Amazon (Maximilian Jacobs commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from France to the United States or New France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Fawsett, gunner, 2 September 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General on the relation of Jacobs v The polacre ship Badin, 2 September 1778;
  • [CP 3-CP 5]: three depositions of John Dennis, Joseph Roux and Jean Pierre Blanc, respectively pilot, boatswain and master of the Badin, 10 September 1778.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-15:-

  • SP 1-SP 2: official ship's paper and bill of health, from Cadiz;
  • SP 3-SP 11: ship's business papers, including detailed lists of goods;
  • SP 12-SP 15: four sets of pattern cards of fabric samples of scarlet and blue Londrins Secondes woollen cloth, of Joseph Mage [for army uniforms?].

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-5; Ship's papers: 6-20 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2024].
