Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Babette of St Malo (master François Morand).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (180 tons, 14 men) bound from Brest to North America, laden with salt, bale goods, and cordage; taken on 5 January 1779 by the privateer Speedwell (Daniel Bredthafft commanding), and brought into Guernsey.

Intended voyage: from France to [the United States or New France?].

Court papers numbered CP 1-5:-

  • [CP 1]: three depositions of François Morand, François Corbe and Louis Gautier cabin boy, 30 January 1779;
  • [CP 2]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-5) brought in by Daniel Bredthafft, 30 January 1779;
  • [CP 3]: translations of ships papers, 26 March 1779;
  • [CP 4]: allegation, 27 March 1779;
  • [CP 5]: wrapper.

  • SP 3-SP 4: official ship's papers;
  • SP 5: bill of lading;
