Description

Folios 284-285: Edward Killwick, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Encloses a Petition from James Long requesting he be allowed to go on shore to attend to business of the utmost consequence to him and some of the Liverpool merchants. On his entering into a bond to find two substitutes has accepted the Bond for the reasons mentioned in it. Hopes his action meets with Admiralty approval but requests given some direction as to how to proceed in such occasions in the future.

Folios 286-287: enclosure with folios 284-285. Letter from James Long, HMS Princess dated 10 October 1809 to Captain Edward Killwick. States he is the owner of the sloop Irvin [?] and the reason for soliciting to give a bond to find two substitutes in his place is as follows. He had loaded his vessel at Belfast in Ireland partly on his own account and partly with freight which was to be discharged at Limerick from where was to proceed to Gibraltar or any other port in the Mediterranean. To dispose of part of the cargo put into Liverpool in distress and was impressed on Sunday 8 October by one of Captain Horton's Lieutenants. This has stopped him discharging his ship or getting repairs done. Part of cargo consists of tobacco and some goods perishing thus requiring his immediate attendance. By way of security gives a bond of £100 in case he fails to find substitutes.

Folios 288-289: enclosure with folios 284-285. Bond given by Andrew Tod Paterson and John Michael Malonek (Lancaster merchants) to Edward Killwick, Regulating Captain in the sum of £100 dated 10 October 1809. Bond relates to the liberating of James Long, who had been impressed, on their finding two able bodied substitutes within fourteen days.
