Description

Folios 112-113: Sir Henry Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol. Reply to orders 31 May from Lord Gambier, Admiral of Blue C-in-C Channel Fleet. Sends letter and copies.

Folio 114: enclosed in folios112-113. Memorandum; encloses reports by British Consul at Corunna for about captured British vessels and property June last. Original to Mr Gagot for Mr Canning.

Folios 115-116: enclosed in folios 112-113. Sir Henry Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol, 22 August 1809. Sends copy of dispatchtes he's sent to Lord Gambier.

Folios 117-118: enclosed in folios 115-116. Captain Sir Henry Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol, 22 August 1809. Reporting his arrival from Corunna 31 July. He fitted out and took the Spanish ships to Cadiz. Reports HMS Norge, HMS Barfleur and HMS Zealous arriving from Lisbon whose crews assisted. Obtained five gun boats from the Arsenal and two frigate’s anchors which he’ll keep.

Folios 119-120: enclosed in folios 115-116. HMS Barfleur, Ferrol, 15 August 1809. Signed George Ramsden, HMS Defiance, Samuel Brokensha, HMS Norge, J. Hynsoe, HMS Zealous and J. Seymour, HMS Barfleur to Captain Hotham. Survey. They’ve walked up the harbour south side and down the north. Say it’s not practical for ships to tack as it’s too rocky. Recommend ships moor at anchors between Point Redonda and Castle de St Carlo to wait for sailing winds.

Folios 121-122: enclosed in folios 119-120. Captain Hotham, HMS Defiance, Ferrol, 13 August 1809 to the Ships Masters, HMS Defiance, HMS Norge, HMS Zealous and HMS Barfleur. Orders to find ways to get ships out of port. Reporting under Captain Sir Thomas M. Hardy’s directions about anchor positions.
