Description

Folios 449-450: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 5 April. Fisher Wilson, born in Cumberland, was pressed by Lieutenant Clarke on 2 April as an Able Seaman. The enclosed indenture was produced to claim him, but an alteration in the date and a reward offered for his liberation convinced Captain Horton that he had been at sea for more than 3 years. The case of David Miles was reported in the letter of 1 April [see folio 435]. In reply to the letter of 3 April, Captain Horton has complied with the order to return the indenture to Miles, and to inform him that his discharge has ben refused. John Morrison, born in Greenock, was pressed by Lieutenant Baly on 3 April as an Able Seaman. He said he was born in New York, and produced an American Protection dated January 1804, which did not match his description. He later acknowledged he had served 5 years out of Greenock. John Kirkbride, born in Workington, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 30 March as an Able Seaman. He said he was Mate of the Triton. He was taken on shore at night, very drunk. He returns the enclosures. Neil Norman, who is to be discharged if a genuine Swedish subject, according to the letter of 3 April, was discharged into HMS Pheasant and sailed for Plymouth on 26 March. Also sends the weekly returns of men raised at Liverpool [not present].

Folios 451-452: enclosure with folios 449-450. Petition dated 4 April 1809 from Ann Mainwaring to The Admiralty. Petition for the discharge of John Morrison, pressed on 3 April. She runs a lodging house and is owed money by the man. Points out that she has raised men for the Navy in the past, as substitutes for her husband William Mainwaring and brother-in-law William Patterson, for a lodger John Burns, and several others, so they could pay their debts to her.

Folio 453: enclosure with folios 449-450. Covering letter for folios 451-452, dated 4 April 1809, from Ann Mainwaring, 37 Mersey Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty.

Folios 454-455: enclosure with folios 449-450. Letter dated 4 April 1809 from Isabella Kirkbride, c/o William Rushton, Draper, 23 Pow Lane, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Mr Kirkbride, Mate of the Triton of Workington, was pressed in Liverpool at night. He was in fact on duty as the Master was ill, as certified by the enclosed Surgeon's certificate. The ship has just arrived from Waterford with a full cargo and cannot be unloaded in the absence of the Mate. Her brother has a very small family who will be distressed in his absence.

Folio 456: enclosure with folio 454. Certificate dated 3 April 1809 from J Nicks, Surgeon, Liverpool. Certifies that Thomas Middlemast, Master of the Triton is dangerously ill. His vessel is seriously affected by the loss of its Mate John Kirkbride, as it cannot discharge its cargo in his absence.

Folios 457-458: enclosure with folios 449-450. Letter dated 3 April 1809 from ? Brown, 8 Old Dock, Liverpool. to The Admiralty. Encloses the indenture for the apprentice Fisher Wilson, who has been pressed. Attached to the indenture is the statement that he is Mr Brown's apprentice. The brig is ready to sail for Quebec and Mr Brown needs his apprentice back. Requests his discharge.

Folio 459: enclosure with folios 449-450. Certificate dated 23 January 1807 issued by David Gelston, Collector of the District of New York, for David Miles, an American Seaman, confirming his American citizenship.
