Folios 417-418: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 27 March. Joshua Simms, born in Prescott, entered with Lieutenant Rees on 22 March as a Landsman Volunteer. He was not pressed, and declared he was not an apprentice. Henry Scaith, born in Prescott, entered with Lieutenant Rees at the same time as a Landsman Volunteer. He also declared he was not an apprentice. Titus Henshall, born in Macclesfield, entered with Lieutenant Clarke as a Landsman Volunteer, substitute for William Johnson. He positively denied being an apprentice. John Sherrak, as stated in the letter on 16 February, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 7 February. He said he was born in America. He produced a Protection signed by the Consul in Rotterdam, but information was given that he was born in Ireland. He was interviewed in the presence of the Deputy American Consul, who concluded from his strong Irish accent and other circumstances that the Protection did not belong to him and that he was an Irish native. He was sent in HMS Pheasant which sailed on 26 March for Plymouth. He returns the enclosures.
Folios 419-420: enclosure with folios 417-418. Letter dated 25 March 1809 from Charles Simms, 15 Frederick Street, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. Encloses an indenture [not present] relating to his apprentice, Joshua Simms. He left on 22 March and came to Liverpool, where he was pressed. Requests his discharge.
Folios 421-422: enclosure with folios 417-418. Letter dated 25 March 1809 from Thomas Murrow, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. James Skeath, a collier, of Prescott, states the case for his son Henry Skeath, who is on board HMS Princess. About 3 months ago he was badly hurt in an explosion in a coal pit. He appears to have recovered except that he is disordered in his mind. His brother was killed in a similar accident. His mother is in bad health and very distressed by the death of her other son. He understands that the public good requires individual sacrifices but hopes that the family situation will be taken into consideration.
Folios 423-424: enclosure with folios 417-418. Letter dated 25 March from Joseph Daltera, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Encloses the indenture [not present] of Titus Henshall, whose father and Master have come from Macclesfield to claim him. He appears to have volunteered as a substitute for another person. Requests his discharge.
Folios 425-426: enclosure with folios 417-418. Letter dated 23 March 1809 from Ann ? Monce, 15 New York Terrace, Wapping, Liverpool, to The Admiralty. She is willing to find 2 substitutes for John Sherrack, currently on board HMS Princess.
