Folios 40-41: enclosure with folios 38-39. Letter dated 1 August 1809 by Henry Lidgbird Ball , Portsmouth, to Honorable W W Pole. He understands that Captain Davison of the Royal Marines belonging to HMS Gibraltar has been arrested and is in gaol. He writes to ask if he will write to the Admiralty to explain the circumstances whereby Captain Davison came to be absent from HMS Gibraltar. The fact was that a few days before he received an order from the Admiralty to attend the court martial of Lord Gambier, Captain Davison asked that I give him a few days leave to fit out a younger brother who had no one to take care of him, when he arrived in Plymouth. As he assured the Captain he would return and so he gave him permission to leave.
