He encloses a request from a number of his officers for remuneration of the expenses they incurred when entertaining loyal Portuguese individuals who escaped to the ship during the period that the enemy had possession of their country. He hopes the Admiralty will grant their request.
Folios 16-17: enclosure with folios 14-1. A letter dated 1 July 1809 from the Gentlemen of the Wardroom of HMS Ganges. The letter explains that the signatories have been put to great personal expense supporting the unfortunate Portuguese citizens who fled French tyranny to the safety of HM Fleet. They totalled 57 people in all whom are listed by name. The total expenses incurred amounted to one hundred pounds, which they ask the Admiralty to reimburse.
