Description

Folios 637-638: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty query of 10 December, advises that Jacob Stepeler, said to be a Dane, had been sent aboard the Actaeon on 2 December from the Rendezvous, and on the 3rd he had been forwarded to the Fleet aboard HMS L'Heureux.

Folios 639-640: enclosure with folios 637-638. Letter dated 6 December 1800 by Lorenz Hansen [Danish Consul], Liverpool, regretting that the regulating captain has made it necessary for him to trouble their Lordships, but that a Danish seaman, Jacob Stepeler, had been impressed despite having in his pocket a protection signed by him on 15 November.

Folios 641-642: enclosure with folios 637-638. Letter dated 13 December 1800 by T. Goldesbrough, Liverpool. saying that the Danish Consul at Liverpool has complained of his having pressed Stepeler, who had been given a protection by him. However, he himself on examining the man felt sure he was a Welshman from his complexion, and the fact he had paid half a guinea for his protection confirmed this so far as he was concerned. Says he would be glad to know if Danish and American consuls at the port are actually authorised to give these protections and if he should reject men who have them.
