Description

Folios 539-540: Philip Hue, HMS Actaeon, Liverpool. Responding to Admiralty query of 10 October, he has examined the two men and says he believes William Lloyd to be the apprentice for whom the indentures were executed, while John Baker he finds to be an Ordinary Seaman, about 20, and very fit for HM Service.

Folios 541-542: enclosure with folios 539-540. Letter dated 8 October 1800 by R. Kirkpatrick, Liverpool, saying that John Baker, as a young man of 17 entered the sea service having had a voyage already, and on his return home was impressed. Encloses a deposition and asks for the young man's discharge.

Folio 543: enclosure with folios 541-542. Sworn statement dated 7 October 1800 from William Jump, cotton spinner, of Chester, who swears that his stepson, John Baker, was born in November 1783, in Stafford, and that John Baker had later worked with him as a cotton spinner until August 1799, when he joined a merchant vessel, the Active, bound for the coast of Africa. When the Active returned to the Mersey about 3 weeks since, Baker and some of his shipmates had been impressed from the ship.

Folios 544-545: enclosure with folios 539-540. Letter dated 8 October 1800 by Thomas Hughes, Town Clerk's Office, sending an affidavit, indentures [not now present] and Admiralty protection for William Lloyd, lately impressed and now aboard the Actaeon. Asking for his discharge. On folio 545 is the sworn statement of William Timothy, Master of the sloop Valiant, of Barmouth, that Lloyd is his apprentice, and had never been to sea before being indentured. He had been impressed whilst not having his protection with him.

Folios 546-547: enclosure with folios 544-545: Official protection dated 4 March 1799 for William Lloyd, who was bound apprentice on 4 March 1799 for three years. Described in margin as being 5ft 5ins, sandy complexion, dark hair and about 16 years old.
