Description

Folios 76-77: Henry Richard Glynn, Regulating Captain, Poole Rendezvous. Reports that Thomas Couk was impressed on 29 [March 1808] by Lieutenant Hiatt out of the Portsmouth sloop. He told me he was between 18 and 19 years old. There was no age inserted on his indenture. His Master never claimed him as being under age but said he was never at sea before being apprenticed. He was informed he had been 4 years [at sea].

Folios 78-79: enclosure with folios 76-78. Letter dated 1 April 1808 from John Burdham, Master of the Portsmouth sloop, Poole, to W W Pole. His apprentice Thomas Couk was impressed a few days ago and Captain Glynn refused his discharge on grounds the boy had been at sea before the date of his indenture. He is not impressable as he is under age as proof of which he encloses an affidavit of his father and a certificate of his baptism. Asks for him to be discharged from HMS Royal William.

Folio 80: enclosure with folios 78-79. Affidavit dated 31 March 1808 sworn by Thomas Couk of Studland, Dorset, Labourer, before J M Colson, one of the Justices of the Peace for Dorset, at Corfe Castle, Dorset. He is the father of Thomas Couk the younger lately impressed at Poole out of the Portsmouth sloop, John Burdham Master. His son was born on 26 March 1791. Extract of the register at Studland. Thomas son of Thomas and Ann Couk was born March 26 and christened 3 April 1791 registered April 22 by John Morton Colson. Witnessed as a true copy on 31 March 1808 by J M Colson, Rector of Studland.
