The David sailed on 25 [January 1808]. James King was impressed on board the Britannia by Lieutenant Hiatt on 23 [January 1808]. He is 23 years old, has been at sea 13 years, 5 or 6 in His Majesty's service, and is an Able Seaman. Mr Oldest, one of the owners, went in her. He has commanded a merchant vessel for many years and therefore he considered him the real Master and Mr Hayward, the nominal Master to be the Mate. They were sent to HMS Royal William on 25 [January 1808].
Folios 71-73: enclosure with folios 69-70. Letter dated 28 January 1808 from J Jeffery, St Albans Hotel, to Vice Admiral Sir Richard Bickerton, Admiralty. Draws his attention to the enclosed statements. Both ships belong to good friends at Poole. The brig Britannia, Captain Hayward Master ['Master' struck through] arrived a few days ago at Poole from Newfoundland when the Mate James King was impressed although the cargo is not discharged. It is alleged that one of the owners, Captain Oldis was on board and acted as master and that King was only nominal Mate. The brig David belonging to Messrs Saunders & Co arrived at Poole a few days ago from Newfoundland with a cargo of fish. William Ames who has been the Mate for 4 years was impressed on the allegation that his name was not on the ship's articles. The ship is bound to London to discharge the cargo. The Mate's affidavit together with the Captain's are absolutely necessary to identify the cargo without which the Bounty on the cargo cannot be recovered. The Mate has been sent to Portsmouth and the ship is detained in Poole.
Folio 73: enclosure with folios 69-70. Copy of agreement dated 19 March 1807 signed by J Wilkinson and certified by John Hosier clerk.
