Folios 298-299: Thomas Briggs, HMS Clorinde at sea. Reports that on the night of 18 May 1814, HMS Semiramis was run onboard by the Vansittart Merchant ship of 1200 tons belonging to the convoy and was left in a sinking state with the loss of the cutwater, foremast, bowsprit, maintop mast and the main mast sprung. Describes the incident and why the Vansittart was at fault. Encloses a letter from Captain Charles Richardson and states that he bears testimony to the zeal and activity of Captain Richardson and his officers and ship's company in repairing in 2 days the damages to HMS Semiramis [item not enclosed].
Folios 300-301: enclosure with folios 298-299: Letter, dated 19 May 1814, Charles Richardson, Captain, HMS Semiramis, St Helena to Thomas Briggs, HMS Clorinde. Describes the damage tot he ship in the accident that took place at 2 o'clock in the morning of 19 May 1814. Confirms that no-one was killed or wounded. States that if an enquiry is held it will be shown that Lieutenant William Sterne, the officer in charge of the Watch did everything to avoid the collision.
