Description

Prisoner's name: Henry Vickery; Samuel Cowlen.

Prisoner's age: Vickery aged 16; Cowlen aged 18.

Court and date of trial: Kent Summer Assizes 1830.

Crime: Housebreaking at the house of James Rose of Eltham.

Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Character not known.

Other papers: A letter from Mr Miles requesting Mr Agar to question Glover and Havens; their answers. A letter from Mr Miles acknowledging receipt of Mr Agar's letter hoping he will support the case with Lord Tenterden. A letter from Thomas Agar, Keeper of Maidstone Gaol stating that Havens has admitted committing the crime and Glover has been committed for the same offence. A letter from Joseph Jackson, magistrate, stating that Vickery and Cowlen are both bad characters and he cannot take the matter further. A letter from Thomas Agar enclosing Mr Jackson's letter and enquiring whether he should act on the order for Vickery and Cowlen's removal to Sheerness.

Additional Information: Havens [Avins] convicted with Vickery and Cowlen.
