Description

Prisoner's name: Sarah Inns [Sarah Innes].

Prisoner's age: 20.

Prisoner's occupation: servant.

Court and date of trial: Worcestershire Quarter Sessions January 1830.

Crime: Stealing - a feather bed (a bed and blanket, knives and forks), property of Thomas Smith of Wick.

Initial sentence: 7 years transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character etc good.

Annotated: Case for the penitentiary; free pardon prepared 22 January.

Petitioner: Convict and 8 people including the prosecutor.

Grounds for clemency: Convict's father a respectable labourer with a property of his own; reared a family of 12 children; she had good references; a male servant induced her to perform the crime; she had a baby which died; she is now unfit to be transported.

Other papers: Recommendation for mercy by James Best. A letter from John Nelson Lavender certifying the convict's good behaviour in custody; he would employ her.
