1 individual petition (Mary Matthews, mother) and 1 collective petition (4 people) on behalf of William Reaman [William Henry Matthews] convicted at the Old Bailey on 9 January 1831 for stealing a handkerchief from J W Edginton on 27 December 1830. Gaoler's report: in prison before. Grounds for clemency: falsely accused of stealing handkerchief when picked it up, real culprit disappeared, gave false name to protect family and friends from shame, keeper at Newgate was wrongly told that parents wanted prisoner to be transported, no one to speak on his behalf at trail. Initial sentence: 14 years' transportation. Annotated: nil. NP 18
