Description (What the record is about)
-
Appendix 11: Copy testimony of William Benstead, employed as Hoyman between Maidstone and London for more than 30 years. Testifies to an astonishing accumulation of soil at Castle Shoal which affects the flow of the river down as far as New Hithe. Details areas where he has noticed shoaling and the diminishing of the extent of the tidal flow. Gives detailed answers to questions about the building of the Maidstone Locks and stresses their importance in making the river navigable. Feels that the removal of Rochester Bridge and the shoals around the bridge up to Castle Shoal would scour the channel.
