Description (What the record is about)

Petition of Captain Thomas Dewey who was sent to the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth by Lord Nelson and after 3 years was entered on the Seaford, Captain Shouldham. In 1777 he was wounded, losing part of his left leg and a smart ticket was made out but he never applied for the pension, wishing to continue in the Navy. He passed his examination to qualify as Lieutenant on crutches and in 1759 was appointed as Lieutenant and served in the Navy, including 9 years at a foreign station. In 1789 he was appointed Master and Commander and sent in 1793 to Exeter to raise men for 5 years but was not allowed expenses incurred and his half pay was stopped. Is 70 years of age. Witnesses: Chamber of Exeter and members of Justices of Exeter.
