Description (What the record is about)
-
Mr. Greetham to the Board. By use of the muster books for September to December 1803, he was able to provide information to the Solicitors' agent, Mr. Knight, in London. This showed how the personification took place. Messrs. Rouse, Green and Stephens, were all actively involved. The Charter Party, which hired the Spider was drawn up by Thomas Heather and Thomas Rouse, with the Board in September 1803. At one of the musters in November, apprentices and workmen of the Builder, Mr. Richard of Gosport, a part owner of the Spider, were involved. At the first muster Lieutenant Tomlinson was present and must have known that shore people had taken part in a false muster. The books for December showed that two musters are supposed to have taken place at sea and one at Cowes, on each of which 30 men are supposed to have been mustered. The Steward swears that no such musters took place and that no more than 32 men including Lieutenant, Master and a Mate, were on board. Green Stephens and Rouse have all been bailed to appear at the next Assize.
