Description (What the record is about)
-
William Marsden. Mr. Brunel, making block machines at Portsmouth, thinks that those engaged on the work should receive higher pay. He believes that they have been using the new methods long enough to show increased dexterity and expedition and they should receive more money for increased output. The Officers have approved the plan and Mr. Brunel has approached the Master Shipwright. He says he finds it impossible to decide on the increased production until the new methods are used on a wider scale. But he does recognize that those labourers who have proved their assiduity and dexterity to assume responsibility for their machines, should receive increases. Some, who do more complex work, such as the mortising engines, the shaping engines, those who turn iron pins and turn the shivers, should get an increase of 1s. per day. Others, whose machines are less demanding, such as the boring engines, scoring engines and those who turn wooden pins or attend in the cabin, should earn an increase of 8d. per day. Ask for approval.
