Description (What the record is about)
-
Evan Nepean. Refers to Rear Admiral Montague's order to John Voke, Purser of the Cumberland, to purchase Russia duck for the making of slops for that ship and Topaze at Port Royal. Gives details of the slops and hammocks which were in store in Jamaica on 31st October and of those that were about to be sent out. The Naval Storekeeper at Jamaica had requested replenishments of these items regularly and, following the Preliminaries of Peace, 1900 tons of supplies were got ready for Jamaica and partly loaded on Alliance until, that ship being needed for other duties, they were put on the Camel. Rear Admiral Montague's decision to use the Purser to make this purchase without the involvement of the Naval Storekeeper is irregular, as officers are required to draw bills when expenditure is needed.
