Description
Content
Folios 447-448. Letter from William Ashton, Clerk to the Guardians of the Basford Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Commission, submitting the following able bodied relief cases for their sanction: John Wetherall, FWK [Framework knitter], from Lambley, his wife, their daughter Elizabeth Wetherall, FWK [Framework knitter], and five other children. Maria Williamson, Lace Maker, from Arnold, and her children Henry Williamson and one infant. Her husband has absconded and is thought to have gone to America. John Godfrey, FWK [Framework knitter], from Arnold, his wife and their children, Joseph Godfrey, FWK [Framework knitter], Elizabeth Godfrey, Seamstress, John Godfrey, and Hannah Godfrey. They are destitute of clothing and 'are unfit to be seen out of door'. Annotated note from E Senior, [Edward Senior, Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], states that this is another of the weekly applications to sanction relief advanced by the overseers. He recommends relief to Wetherall be disallowed but suspects the board will allow relief to the younger children in the case of Williamson. Paper Number: 7867/B/1841. Poor Law Union Number 334. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
