Folios 46-47. Statement from Joseph B Yates, [President of the Southern and Toxteth Hospital] West Dingle, near Liverpool to the Poor Law Board. Summary of cases of paupers involved in severe cases of accident to which parish vestries and guardians can apply no remedy. At Southern and Toxteth Hospital on 10 February 1851 - Inpatients 73 of which 37 belonged to Liverpool parish and 17 to West Derby Union. These 54 were almost all very sick. The remaining 19 were foreigners and members of clubs. Supposing that in 12 months only 600 such paupers became inmates of this Hospital at cost to the Hospital including diet and all attendance, of £3 per patient. The total cost is £1800 of which Liverpool parish would account for 400 persons equalling £1200 and West Derby Union for 200 persons equalling £600. Towards this cost the Liverpool Select Vestry have never paid a farthing and the Guardians of West Derby have paid the trifling sum of [£15.15s] and that very irregularly. Annotated: this paper was left at the Poor Law Board by [author]. 25 February 1851.
