Description
Content
Folio 303. Draft letter from the Poor Law Commission to W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law union. It acknowledges their letter of 5 February 1840 concerning the employment of Daniel Morrison, Master of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Workhouse. They express some concern at the Guardians' request that Morrison's employment should continue on probation until 25 Mar 1840, and thereafter dependent on a favourable report from the guardians, given the guardians' view of his incompetence, with which the Commissioners concur. However they are prepared to accede to the guardians' request. They consider it necessary to ask their assistant commissioner to examine the master and matron's management of the workhouse and to report on any improvement. This will be considered with the guardians' opinion at the end of the quarter. Paper Number: 1307/A/1840. Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and North Durham [detached].
