Description
Content
Folios 301-302. Letter from W and E Willoby [William Willoby and Edward Willoby], Clerks to the Guardians of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, to Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission. It encloses a resolution passed by the Berwick-upon-Tweed board of guardians at their meeting on 4 February 1840 concerning the employment of Daniel Morrison, Workhouse Master of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Workhouse. The resolution says that they had considered the letter from the Poor Law Commission and the enclosed copy of the letter from Morrison to the Commissioners. Morrison's letter does not remove the charge of neglect nor alter their opinion as to his competency. However they consider that justice would be served if the Commissioners will continue Morrison in his post until 25 March 1840, when his reinstatement would be dependent on a favourable report from the board of guardians. Annotated: Sir John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner] for his observations. See report annexed, J W. Paper Number: 1307/A/1840. Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and North Durham [detached].
