Description
Content
Folios 296-297. Letter from Sir John Walsham [Assistant Poor Law Commissioner], to the Poor Law Commission. It concerns the misconduct of Daniel Morrison, Master of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Workhouse and refers to papers 263/A/1840 and 265/A/1840. He suggests that they send the Berwick-upon-Tweed board of guardians a copy of Morrison's letter for their opinion before reaching a final decision. He also encloses a draft letter to the guardians to accompany it. He further asks that on receipt of the Guardians' reply that Morrison's letter and the guardian's original letter [263/A/1840] are referred back to him. Draft letter to the Berwick-upon-Tweed Board of Guardians. It encloses a copy of Morrison's letter and asks for the Board's observations on it. On receipt of their opinion the Commissioners will give their final decision. They also commend the vigilance of the auditor and firmness of the guardians. Note by Walsham to the last sentence: that certain peculiarities in the constitution of the board render it desirable that some such phrase as the above should be inserted. In most other unions it would be superfluous. He would like a copy of the Commissioners' letter when sent and urges that no time is lost. Annotated: follow the course suggested by Walsham and send the letter to the guardians as drafted by him. Paper Number: 378/A/1840. Town and County of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland and North Durham [detached].
