Description
Content
Folios 24-25. Letter from Edmund Turner, Magistrate, Truro, to the Poor Law Commission, thanking them for their letter of 29 November 1834. The old people [in Kenwyn] he was concerned about receive 1s 6d per week, which is not enough to support them, the deficiency being made up by their friends. The select vestry has stopped these payments on the understanding that they enter the workhouse. Their families wish to keep them out and the magistrate has no power over the vestry. He asks the Commissioners for their opinion and suggests that if the law cannot help, they might make an exception in this case. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
