Description
Content
Folios 13-14. Letter from Robert Lampen, Vicar of Probus, to E Chadwick [Edwin Chadwick, Secretary to the Poor Law Commission], thanking the Commissioners for their response to his previous letter and as chairman of the vestry, forwarding the resolutions of their meeting of 7 November 1834: 1. as the building of the workhouse is at an advanced stage, they need to appoint a governor and ask the Commissioners for instructions on how to proceed with this; 2. they reject the Commissioners' proposal to incorporate with other parishes to manage the workhouse, as theirs is a large parish and the building is only big enough for their own needs. Annotated: that the Commission cannot make any promise on the union of Probus with other parishes, but would only recommend this if it was advantageous to all parties. They recommend appointing a stranger as workhouse governor and will help with the selection. Poor Law Union Number 57. Counties: Cornwall.
