Description

1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of Henry Blanchard Dubois [Henry Blanchard De Bois], physician, convicted at Surrey Winter Assizes Kingston upon Thames on 19 December 1831 for stealing £24, property of William Fletcher, in a house on 29 July. There is a report dated 1 February 1832 from the trial judge Sir John Patteson stating no reason to question verdict. Grounds for clemency:

  • prisoner and victim had travelled and lodged together for several days so Fletcher could see how much money the prisoner had and was able to make false accusations to extort money,
  • no proof provided as to where the money, which was claimed to have been stolen, came from,
  • respectable character,
  • held position as magistrate in America,
  • no friends in England to speak for the prisoner at trial.

Initial sentence: transportation for life, commuted sentence. Gaoler's report: character unknown. Annotated: nil. KQ 15
