1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (26 people from Oxford) on behalf of William Bateman, head porter to carrier, convicted at Oxford City Quarter Sessions on 20 October 1831 for manslaughter against James Lovesey Gilder, a child aged 9 on 29 September 1831. There is a transcript of notes of evidence on the case from John Wastie, Deputy Recorder 21 January 1832. Grounds for clemency: child ran out in front of cart and was unable to stop, unavoidable accident, happened when light fading, wife and 4 children dependent on parish relief while in prison, always been sober and industrious worker. Initial sentence: 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour. Annotated: nil. KQ 3
