Description

2 collective petitions and a rider (3, 98 and 14 inhabitants of Chertsey, Surrey) on behalf of Thomas Stafford, tallow chandler, convicted at the Surrey Quarter Sessions at Newington in February 1835 for stealing beans to the value of 3 pence belonging to John Harris on 25 January to feed his own horse. Evidences provided by John Harris, John Fisher, Stephen Pickernill, Richard Tilley, Elizabeth Draycott, George Bell and William Jackson Lovett. There is a report from Robert Hedger, Chairman, which states that the verdict was right but he leaves the decision for mercy to the King. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner is an honest and respectable tradesman, evidence was not produced at trial because he was confident of acquittal, no criminal intent in taking the beans because he thought he was on such good terms with the prosecutor, witnesses claimed the two regularly borrowed items from each other since the prisoner rented a stall in John Harris' stables, the prosecutor asked for mercy. Initial sentence: 3 months imprisonment and hard labour. Annotated: to be pardoned and discharged.

The Chairman's Report also refers to the case of Caroline Bernard, convicted at Surrey Quarter Sessions in February 1835, noting that she was pregnant. AV 51
