2 collective petitions (James Fowler and Sarah Fowler, parents, and 88 inhabitants of Witney, Oxfordshire, including prosecutor) on behalf of Michael Fowler convicted at the Oxford Lent Assizes in March 1834 for stealing plate, property of William Marriott, blanket maker of Witney. Gaoler's report: character not known. Grounds for clemency: prisoner's youth, first offence, previously industrious, married against parents' wishes and fell into bad company, driven to crime because of hardship, unemployed, no mitigating circumstances heard at trial. Initial sentence: death commuted to life transportation. Annotated: nil. AT 19
