2 individual petitions (prisoner and Philip Colson, father) and 2 collective petitions (11 and 16 acquaintances giving addresses) on behalf of Philip Colson convicted at the Old Bailey in April 1834 for stealing two £5 notes from William Dunn. Grounds for clemency: merely found notes, prosecutor so drunk he could have lost notes when fell down and he could not positively identify prisoner, good character witnesses, first offence, some willing to employ him again, might not survive sentence because of ill-health, witnesses to prove he was with his father at the time of the crime. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation commuted to 5 years imprisonment in Millbank Penitentiary. Gaoler's report: character not known, decent connections. AT 11
