Two letters from the Earl of Essex: one forwarding the petition but advising he knows nothing of the case and the other asking for further enquiries to be made. Grounds for clemency: sober, honest and industrious. Has a wife and seven children who are dependent upon him. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. MH25
