Folios 285-286. Letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board. Report of relief granted to the following cases and subject to sanction under article 6. 1. Joseph Dobb a framework knitter, [wife and children; Fanny Dobb, George Dobb] all out of work. The man is of steady character but of weak constitution and 'feeble intellect.' Ordered 1s and 16lbs of bread for two weeks. 2. William Chapman framework knitter, [wife and children; William Chapman, foundry hand earns 3s; John Chapman also at a foundry earns 2s 9d weekly and John Chapman earns 1s]. The two boys are outdoor apprentices living at home if taken into the workhouse they must either give up work or be left at home alone. The family is respectable and well conducted. 3. Joseph Goodall framework knitter, [wife and children; Samuel Goodall, Eliza Goodall and Sarah Goodall] very destitute and in want of food, but work has been promised in a few days. Ordered 24lbs of bread for one week. 4. Joseph Stanhope framework knitter, [wife and children; Fredrick Stanhope, Charles Stanhope, Henry Stanhope and Elizabeth Stanhope] ordered 2s and 24lbs of bread for one week. Annotated: as the relief in these cases was previously ordered... this relief should be sanctioned and that the guardians should be informed of the ground for sanctioning it. Annex the last letter on this subject. Sanction as proposed by Mr Weale. Paper Number: 24220/1855. Poor Law Union Number 337. Counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
